About the festival

The Portsmouth Film Festival is an annual celebration of all kinds of film.  This year it took place from Thurs 23rd to Sun 26th September 2010 for one long weekend of film events, features, shorts, installations and workshops exploring the darker and lighter side of the seaside. The main highlight was a unique celebration of The Who’s Tommy that was filmed on location in Southsea set to live music.

Ken Russell attends Tommy screening

35 years after the The Who’s 1975 musical film Tommy, director Ken Russell attended the Portsmouth Film Festival’s screening of Tommy back at the venue where he filmed the iconic Pinball Wizard scene starring Roger Daltry and Elton John.

Many of the extras who had taken part in a special short documentary made by Portsmouth Film Festival –"Can you see me Tommy?” who were also in the audience of the screening, gave Ken Russell raptuous applause as he said a few words about the making of the film.
